From Keokuk Iowa, mustered in as Captain and advanced to Colonel of the 1st Iowa Cavalry Regiment serving throughout the Civil War. Served in Texas for a short time after the war with General G.A. Custer. Custer later accused the soldiers and officers of the 1st of much improper behavior. McQueen and Captain Morrill both refuted his accusations. Brevet Brigadier General in October 1866. Henry Payne was born in Clay County, Illinois, the son of Harmon and Mina Straley Payne. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University and University of Illinois. He began working for the Illinois Department of Public Aid at Rockford in 1961 and married Nancy Tarpley Greenwood in 1964. He and Nancy were both interested in genealogy.
